People mostly seem to like KDE Plasma more than GNOME, but Ubuntu still seems way more popular. Will Kubuntu ever overtake Ubuntu? Will people ever default to saying Kubuntu instead of saying Ubuntu even when speaking generally about *buntus?
Same questions for other distros like Fedora/Fedora KDE
No. Most distros have their primary DE. Ubuntu uses Gnome. And Kubuntu doesn't count as a different distro.
Simply no. Canonical always used GNOME and I don't see that's changing.
From the user's point of view, if you discovered KDE you might have discover other distros as well. Kubuntu still be your start point though, or even where you settle.
Ubuntu used to have it's own GTK based desktop, Unity, from 11.04 to 17.04.
Eh, a small gap in the CV doesn't change that I guess. :)
Also IIRC Unity started with 10.10, as a netbook edition.
Yes, but later it became the standard DE. The original Unity was a great DE for Netbooks.
Indeed it was. I still miss the last Gnome 2 version with 2.32 though (I think).
except during the period when they used https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unity_%28user_interface%29
Well, they try things time to time. They had their own init system, own display server. They eventually went with more mainstream variants, almost every time.
It is for me 🙂
No. There are two major DEs and it's them. I see neither is going anywhere and more often than not, both are offered to choose from. I think GNOME is often picked as the default because it's all about simplicity and that makes sense for business-oriented distros like Ubuntu and Fedora
Gnome is better than KDE and I'm tired of pretending it's not.
You don't have to pretend. Different strokes for different folks. I like KDE, you like gnome. Let's hope they both prosper and give more people reasons to leave Windows.
They're both good in their own ways. What's better is the choice we have.
When I say Ubuntu I’m typically talking about the Docker image or a VPS’ (non-desktop) server OS. I don’t want to use Ubuntu as a desktop OS so I’ve never given KDE vs GNOME thought at all.
Why would you want to use Ubuntu as a server?
At the end of the day it's still Linux, and it's really well supported by documentation, packages and how tos. I tried Debian and ran into some driver issues Ubuntu solved. Why worry so much and just use what works. I'm sure Ubuntu server minimal is similar in weight to Debian anyways.
Using it for years now on my VPS with rootless podman containers and steam game servers. The hardware is moderately dimensioned but it performs very well and is extremely reliable. Never had a borked OS upgrade. Is there any reason you'd advise against it?
Usually it is about the attack surface where more (unnecessary) stuff is running/enabled, the bigger the surface is. Ideally you want as small as possible surface, Alpine is perhaps better in that.
