Siemens Slams The Door Shut On Promising Open-Source Radioss Project
4 comments 🔗 phoronix.com ↗As a major disappointment to the open-source community, Siemens has decided to end -- and close-up access -- to the OpenRadioss project as the open-source version opened up by Altair Engineering under the GNU AGPL License back in 2022. This was an open-source version of the industry-leading finite element solver that Altair developed. Siemens acquired Altair Engineering last year and have now completely shut the door on OpenRadioss.
Originally from Altair, Radioss has been an industry-leading solver for analyzing crashes, blasts, and other purposes. Altair creating OpenRadioss was a huge milestone for the technical computing industry. It also had other effects like for myself in finally being able to benchmark with this (Open)Radioss code for CPU performance testing compared to the expensive licensing on Radioss itself.
To much disappointment, I find out today they have completely closed down OpenRadioss. The Siemens.com page now explains of OpenRadioss:
"OpenRadioss is transitioning to a new phase. Visitors looking for crash and impact simulation solutions can now explore Simcenter Radioss and the Radioss R&D program through Siemens. These offerings provide pathways for both production engineering and advanced research activities. ... The OpenRadioss website is being retired and visitors are being redirected to this transition page. If you are looking for simulation software, technical information or opportunities to engage with future development activities, Siemens provides resources and programs to support those needs."Even worse, it's just not the OpenRadioss website being "retired" a.k.a. shutdown but they closed up their GitHub repository too. OpenRadioss on GitHub is now a 404. It would be one thing just to archive it and at least keep the open-source code readily available, but instead it's been removed.
OpenRadioss 404
Siemens argues the OpenRadioss closure as for consolidating efforts:
"After four years of successful community-driven research, Siemens is entering a new chapter for the Radioss solver. To accelerate innovation and provide the robust support our global users require for production-grade simulation, we are consolidating our efforts."Very disappointing to see from such a very promising technical computing project these past few years that was also very useful for real-world performance benchmarking purposes as my main interest in the project. At least for now I'll continue with OpenRadioss benchmarking using archived local binaries for there not being any other superior free or open-source solution available. A major disappointment out of Siemens.

Pakistan sent four planeloads of weapons to Saudi-backed government in Yemen: Report
0 comments 🔗 middleeasteye.net ↗Pakistan sent four cargo planes of armaments to the Saudi-backed, internationally recognised government of Yemen in September as the kingdom mobilises to try to push back a sweeping Houthi offensive.
The Pakistani weapons shipments to the port city of Aden, reported by Reuters on Friday, suggest that Islamabad is increasing its involvement in the war.
Pakistan delivered air defence systems, light artillery, drones and anti-drone systems to Aden, Reuters reported, citing a Pakistani government official. In addition, Pakistani military advisers are also on the ground with their Saudi counterparts supporting Yemeni troops.
Multiple western and Arab officials have told Middle East Eye that Saudi Arabia is preparing for a high-intensity campaign to counter a Houthi offensive that has put the group in control of the entirety of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline.

World’s largest nursing union cuts ties with Israeli drugmaker Teva
3 comments 🔗 middleeasteye.net ↗The world's largest nursing union, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), has cut ties with Israeli pharmaceutical giant Teva over its links to the country's military and a long record of corruption and bribery scandals.
Following the decision, the RCN removed Teva UK as a sponsor and partner of an upcoming event at the union's headquarters in London.
Pro-Palestine groups hailed the move as “a major breakthrough” for the international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to isolate Israel over the Gaza genocide and its apartheid policies in the occupied West Bank.
The RCN, which represents nearly 600,000 nurses, acted after Nurses for Palestine and UK Healthcare Petitions to Royal Colleges (UKHPRC) campaigned against the partnership.
In a public letter, nurses, midwives and healthcare professionals warned that Teva UK is “entangled with the Israeli military, part of the institutional apparatus of apartheid and responsible for corporate malfeasance”.

French TV censors actress Adele Haenel after she condemns Israel’s genocide in Palestine
11 comments 🔗 middleeasteye.net ↗French activist and actress Adele Haenel faced censorship on French television after condemning the Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.
During an appearance on the French channel France 5, Haenel also accused France of being “complicit” in the genocide and called for sanctions against Israel.
Following her comments, the channel's parent company, France Televisions, removed the programme from its replay service.
On Wednesday, 9 September, Haenel appeared on the programme to discuss her first book, which addresses violence against children and the sexual abuse she suffered as a minor at the hands of director Christophe Ruggia.
A court convicted Ruggia in April of sexually assaulting her, in a case that drew national attention in the country.
